Loan Forgiveness Programs In Mississippi
Some states are reviewing how much money they can put into their merit-based grants. At the same time, they have a severe teaching shortage. Mississippi has a way to solve both problems simultaneously.
One form of financial aid that's starting to truly grow is Loan Forgiveness. It works like this. You, the student, receive a low interest college loan from the state, which also comes with one twist that benefits both you and the state. That twist is you take a degree in a profession where there is a severe shortage, such as teaching. You also commit, after graduating, to work in an area that is critically underserved. You will then work there for a previously agreed upon number of years. As long as you work where you are assigned, and you do not have to pay a cent on that loan. Fulfill the previously set number of years, and the loan is "forgiven;" i.e. paid off completely. Mississippi has an incredible array of such plans, specifically so it can get teachers.
The basic program is the Critical Needs Teacher Program. It's offered to college juniors and seniors going for their Bachelor's in Education. New teachers should know going in that upon graduating, they will more than likely be sent to extremely poor districts. At the same time, after about five years, they will then be able to move on to other school districts.
These plans aren't only limited to high school students though. The Alternate Route Teacher Program is also for people who have been working teachers already. Mississippi will pay for their retraining to critical subjects such as math and science and long as they attend a state-based college and teach in a Mississippi-based high school.
For teachers who desire their post-graduate degrees and certification, Mississippi offers the Graduate Teacher Loan Scholarship. If you are an experienced teacher, the state will pay for this post-grad education for more years of service to one of its schools. A similar package is the Counseling and Administration Loan/ Scholarships. This is for teaching pros who want to move into school administration.
The need for educators extends even to Mississippi's colleges and universities. The Magnolia State's shortage of skilled math and science teachers is so acute the state actually is pursuing PhD candidates. Through their Southern Regional Educational Board Doctoral Scholars Program, they are offered a similar loan forgiveness program. Get your PhD, and you must then go and teach at one of the state's institutions of higher learning.
Not that all the state's programs involve forgiveness. For the truly exceptional, the state created the Walter Winter Teacher Scholar Program. High school graduates and college undergraduates who meet this program's criteria will be awarded as much as $4,000 a year, renewable, provided they go to a local college.
